On March 7th, we will begin a twelve-week study on the attributes of God. It is my earnest prayer that as we plumb the depths of the Almighty each of you will gain a greater appreciation for the grandeur of our God and His grace. The Ten Commandments is a battle cry in today’s culture wars. Though the Decalogue came from God and sets forth unmistakable truths, scores of churchmen have set it aside so it will not impregnate their worldview or their daily lives. Dear brothers,

Grace and peace to you. I trust you each had a most blessed Christmas, seeing the Lord Jesus in every movement of the season.

Many of you have expressed that you wished there was more time at the men’s advances for fellowshipping and getting to know each other better. Hearing your hearts and praying through that, we are led to schedule an overnight men’s advance that will grant more time for men to sit and talk, do activities together, eat together, and worship together with the intent of getting to know each other better. The tentative location is the White Oak Conference Center, just north of Winnsboro, SC, for the weekend of May 4 and 5, 2012.

The current vision for the advance is to have you arrive Friday afternoon, by 4:00 PM if possible, get checked-in and then have supper in the Center’s dining hall. Following the meal there will be an activity that will help get everyone moving and acquainted. Then Dr. Perry Bowers will lead us in understanding how we are to be biblical men, husbands and fathers in a non-biblical culture. We will conclude Friday evening with a bonfire and fellowship. Saturday will begin with breakfast in the dining hall followed by a time set apart for you to be alone with the Lord. Later in the morning there will be another time of teaching and opportunities for more fellowship. Following lunch, there will be some activity opportunities available (frisbee golf, ping-pong, basketball, football, fishing, hiking or just free time for fellowshipping). We will conclude around 4:00 PM on Saturday so that you are back home by supper. You may see more information about the White Oak Conference Center by visiting their website. Staying overnight is not a necessity but does enhance the fellowship experience. The conference center is close enough to Columbia to accommodate those that would desire to go home for the evening. The lodging options are for a room alone or for two, four or five to a room, with the prices based accordingly.

A deposit is required to secure your place, so, if you can please advise us of your desire to attend, and submit a $30.00 deposit, per person it will allow us to confirm a spot for you (the deposit goes towards your final bill). You can register below and then submit your check to Christ Church and designate it for the Spring Men’s Advance. The estimated total cost for the weekend, spending the night, will be $66.00 – $92.50 (this includes lodging and 3 meals). There will be scholarships available, so please do not allow the cost to prohibit your attending. It is designed for ages 13 and up and will be a great opportunity for fathers and sons (or son-in-laws); men to invite relatives, friends or co-workers; or come alone and get to know the men at Christ Church.

Christ Church will be offering a Sunday School class entitled Foundations for Christian Living as Young Adults. This offering will be a six-week study and discussion focusing on Genesis 1 – 3, and will be led by Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Brown (Mary Ames). This will be a great time to review the basics of God’s design for creation and to discuss the trials and temptations that are common to us all. Please plan on attending this special offering and pray in advance for the Lord to pour out His blessings upon this time of fellowship and study. Praying for the Next Generation

The theme of our winter Morning Glories is, “Praying for the next generation”.

Mrs. Janie Allen will be teaching on that topic, followed by a prayer shower for all of the babies born into our Christ Church family this year. Coffee and refreshments will be available beginning at 8:30 and the teaching will begin at 9:00. We will conclude our time at 11:30. Extended family and guests are welcome and we encourage our families to use this as an opportunity to let others experience the joy of showering this generation with the fervent, effectual prayers of those Christ has made righteous.

Our vision is to offer a church wide prayer shower each December for all of the babies born that year. Every Blessing, Julie

I am very excited to be resuming our Wednesday evening worship on September 7th. I know that many of you are equally eager, and that you are anticipating the opportunity to feast on the means of grace. As Christians, it is vital to our spiritual journey that we avail ourselves to every opportunity for biblical instruction, prayer, and spiritual fellowship. Wednesday evening allows us to capture all of these and provides the nourishment needed for both body and soul. I want personally, to encourage each of you to come with your families so you can share in this sweet time.

Of course, the blessing of Wednesday evenings should not be restricted to the folks at Christ Church. The second chapter of John’s gospel records the calling of the first disciples. In this account we read that, “Philip found Nathanael and said to him, ‘We have found Him of whom Moses in the Law and also the Prophets wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph’” (2:45). When Philip realized who it was that called him, the first thing he wanted to do was to introduce Christ to someone else. That is what disciple making is—introducing others to Christ! Along with our own spiritual nourishment, Wednesday evenings afford us the opportunity to introduce others to Christ. Let me encourage you to prayerfully consider whom you can invite to join you on Wednesday evenings. Ask the Lord to reveal your “Nathanael” and to give you the courage to introduce them to Christ by inviting them to join you.

I look forward to being with all of you very soon, and to the time we will invest in the Pastoral Epistles—I and II Timothy and Titus. Please pray that the Lord will bless our time together and that your outreach efforts will yield a harvest of new disciples!

Beginning Thursday morning, September 8th there will be an offering for a Men’s Bible Study at 7:15-8:00a.m. on the 4th Floor of the BB&T building on the corner of Richland and Assembly streets. We will invest eight weeks studying I Peter. Our prayer is that the Spirit would stir within you a love for the Scriptures as well as a passion for obedience. I have been blessed with the responsibility to teach this series and implore each of you to pray with me for the Lord’s refining work in all who participate. September is approaching with the speed of lightning, or so it appears to me! It is always a time of new beginnings. I am reminded of Isaiah 43:19, “Do not ponder the things of the past…behold, I am doing a new thing. Now it will spring up; will you not be aware of it?”

God has placed a growing desire on Janie Timmons’s heart to teach Mrs. Elsie Newell’s studies at Christ Church. After much prayer, it became evident that this is the season for Mrs. Timmons to offer the study on HOPE. The study will be offered on Tuesday mornings, beginning September 6th, at 10:00. Child care will be provided, but we ask that you register in advance.

This study will replace the current Wednesday morning study for ladies. It is our prayer that moving the ladies’ morning Bible study to Tuesday morning will enable families to come and participate on Wednesday evenings as well.

Please be praying that God will be glorified in this transition.

In the weeks leading to the celebration and remembrance of the Protestant Reformation we will explore and study the heart of the gospel — the doctrines of grace. Our primer will be The Doctrines of Grace, Rediscovering the Evangelical Gospel by James Montgomery Boice and Philip Graham Ryken (available through Christ Church of the Carolinas (limited quantities) and online here and here). I encourage you to read and ponder the wonderful truth in this book which finds its source for truth only in the Book (Sola Scriptura). The lessons will be as follows:

Each lesson will be introduced with a time of teaching followed by discussion of the topic. Your study of the material will assist in capturing the depth of these truths.

“The doctrines of grace find their origins in the teaching of Jesus, which has been preserved throughout the church in many periods, and which has always been characteristic of the church of its greatest periods of faith and expansion. It follows from this that the evangelical church will again see great days when these truths are widely and fearlessly proclaimed.” – James Montgomery Boice

The lessons are for thinking Christians and for thinking seekers of the truth. The theology of the Reformation will rest any weariness of legalism, worldliness and trendy religion. These frustrations are not unlike those surfaced in the Reformation of the sixteenth century. Therefore, with a renewed interest in the doctrines of grace, there is no time like the present for taking this journey on these ancient paths.
